Le Sun Ranch, un nouvel hôtel extrêmement solaire, a ouvert il y a quelques mois non loin de Byron Bay en Australie. Niché dans l’arrière pays et ses collines ensoleillées, il puise son inspiration dans la bohème californienne des années 70.
Le ranch du soleil
Le Sun Ranch a été imaginé par l’architecte d’intérieur Julia Ashwood et la styliste Jamie Blakey aidées d’un groupe d’amis créatifs proches en guise d’investisseurs. Pour rénover cette ancienne ferme de 55 acres située juste à l’extérieur du centre animé de Byron Bay, ils ont fait la part belle à l’architecture et au lifestyle des ranch californiens et des vieilles haciendas que l’on trouve en Californie.
Deux créatives aux commandes
Amies d’enfance, Julia Ashwood et Jamie Blakey avaient depuis longtemps envie d’un endroit créatif où se poser à Byron Bay et mettre à profit leur passion des voyages et de la déco.
Julia Ashwood est journaliste voyage et nous régale depuis des années avec son site The Vista. Jamie Blakey a été longtemps, elle, à la tête de sa propre marque de vêtements One Tea Spoon (que je vendais à l’époque chez Sunrise !). Et après deux années de rénovations, elles ont ouvert le Sun Ranch le premier septembre dernier, à la fois premier jour du printemps australien et soir de pleine lune !
Une fête rock and roll des années 70
Entourée d’une verdure luxuriante et de collines ondulantes qui ont fait de l’arrière-pays de Byron une destination à part entière, la propriété était auparavant une ferme dont les propriétaires élevaient du bétails mais aimaient aussi faire la fête.
Le projet a alors été pensé « Comme une fête rock and roll des années 70 », dit Ashwood à propos des intérieurs. « Les tons sont ceux d’un ranch californien avec une belle influence espagnole. »
Et de s’inspirer d’un lieu où un groupe s’installerait pour composer un album ou où Jack Kerouac se poserait pour écrire un de ses livres, blotti au coin du feu dans l’une des cabanes en bois.
Chaque détail été longuement réfléchi. Un salon avec canapés en velours et cheminée inspirée par Valentine Schlegel, une palette de couleurs chaudes mêlant les tons bordeaux, terracotta et kaki et toujours une esthétique vintage et chaleureuse.
Une conscience écologique
Le lifestyle healthy de Byron Bay a aussi influencé le projet afin de réduire l’empreinte écologique de l’hôtel. Construction durable pour les rénovations et les nouvelles entités, énergie solaire, réservoirs d’eau de pluie ainsi que la plantation de plus de 10 000 arbres et plantes indigènes. Les produits de beauté et le linge de maison sont biologiques et les créatrices ont chiné beaucoup de mobilier vintage. A la fois pour son allure mais aussi donc pour upcycler le plus possible.
Un lieu holistique
Pensé pour le bien-être absolu de ses invités, le Sun Ranch est doté d’une piscine de 25 mètres de long construite en roches de basalte provenant de la propriété et située à flanc de colline. Un spa, un espace dédié à la méditation ou à la détente et un cold plunge viennent compléter les installations. L’hôtel possède même son propre cercle de guérison, the Stoney Ridge, situé au sommet de la propriété. N’oublions pas qu‘il a ouvert une nuit de pleine lune et qu’à ce titre, il privilégie un lifestyle absolument new age.
Et cerise sur le gâteau, il y a aussi des chevaux pour faire de longues promenades au coucher du soleil, une aire de barbecue pour soirées en plein air, des ateliers spirituels et bien évidemment des cours de yoga et même des lectures astrologiques.
Un lieu à vivre comme une expérience à part entière, à l’abris des tumultes du monde et de la foule. Une capsule temporelle et spirituelle où se ressourcer assurément !

The SUN RANCH, an Australian ode to 70s California bohemia
The Sun Ranch, an extremely sunny new hotel, opened a few months ago not far from Byron Bay in Australia. Nestled in the sun-drenched hills of the outback, it draws its inspiration from the Californian bohemia of the 70s.
The Sun Ranch
The Sun Ranch was imagined by interior designer Julia Ashwood and stylist Jamie Blakey, aided by a group of close creative friends as investors. To renovate this 55-acre former farmhouse located just outside the bustling center of Byron Bay, they drew on the architecture and lifestyle of California ranches and old haciendas.
Two creative minds at the helm
Childhood friends Julia Ashwood and Jamie Blakey had long wanted a creative place to settle in Byron Bay and put their passion for travel and interior design to good use.
Julia Ashwood is a travel journalist who has been delighting us for years with her website The Vista. Jamie Blakey has long run her own clothing brand, One Tea Spoon (which I used to sell at Sunrise!). And after two years of renovation, they opened Sun Ranch on September 1, the first day of Australian spring and the evening of a full moon!
A 70s rock and roll party
Surrounded by lush greenery and rolling hills that have made the Byron hinterland a destination in its own right, the property was formerly a farm where the owners raised cattle but also loved to party.
The project was then thought « Like a 70s rock and roll party, » says Ashwood of the interiors. « The tones are California ranch with a nice Spanish influence. »
And to be inspired by a place where a band would settle down to compose an album, or where Jack Kerouac would settle down to write one of his books, snuggled up by the fire in one of the wooden cabins.
Every detail was carefully considered. A living room with velvet sofas and a fireplace inspired by Valentine Schlegel, a warm color palette mixing burgundy, terracotta and khaki tones and always a warm vintage aesthetic.
An ecological conscience
Byron Bay’s healthy lifestyle also influenced the project to reduce the hotel’s ecological footprint. Sustainable construction for renovations and new entities, solar power, rainwater tanks as well as the planting of over 10,000 native trees and plants. Beauty products and linens are organic, and the designers have sourced a lot of vintage furniture. Both for its looks and to upcycle as much as possible.
A holistic place
Designed for the absolute well-being of its guests, Sun Ranch boasts a 25-metre swimming pool built from basalt rocks sourced from the property and set into the hillside. A spa, a meditation or relaxation area and a cold plunge complete the facilities. The hotel even has its own healing circle, the Stoney Ridge, located at the top of the property. Let’s not forget that it opened on the night of a full moon, and as such favors an absolutely new age lifestyle.
And to top it all off, there are horses for long sunset rides, a barbecue area for outdoor parties, spiritual workshops and, of course, yoga classes and even astrological readings.
A place to live as an experience in its own right, sheltered from the hustle and bustle of the world and the crowds. A spiritual time capsule where you can recharge your batteries!
